Ird tincture is a strong extraction of our wild Ethiopian turmeric. We use it on the bar at our Oakland restaurant, Cafe Colucci for cocktails but you can also use it in baking and in smoothies. It add a rich yellow color to most recipes you add it to.

We have two versions listed below - the original Ird Tincture and the Spicy Mitmita Ird tincture (for the cocktail Mitmita Me There). 

 

INGREDIENTS 

  • 3/4 cup - high proof clear liquor (vodka, everclear)
  • 4 tbsp - Ird 
  • * For the Spicy Mitmita Ird Tincture use 1.5 tbsp Ird & 2.5 tbsp Mitmita

 

TOOLS

  • Glass jar
  • Small glass bottle, ideally with a glass dripper (about 6oz)
  • Cheese cloth or coffee filter
  • Funnel

STEPS

  1. Combine your ingredients in a jar. Seal the lid tightly to combine.
  2. Wait 48 hours.
  3. Set the funnel in the top of the bottle and line with cheese cloth or a coffee filter. Slowly strain the liquid into the bottle. 
  4. Discard the spices and cap the bottle.
